CONTINUED development in basketball is on the cards as the new season
gets underway.
Beginning on 4 November, the new season will see more than 300 players take to the court including some of the stars from the 2010/11 season.
Amongst those will be Donna Brehaut and Sam Norris who were named ‘most improved female’ and ‘most promising junior’ respectively at the recent annual awards evening.
This season’s league comprises four divisions: men’s first and second divisions, junior men’s division and women’s division.
Pat Ogier, president of the Guernsey Basketball Association (GBA), is looking forward to the league matches getting underway.
“The sport now has a strong following in the island. After the success of both the Inter Insular and the Island Games, we are really looking forward to building the local leagues, getting more people involved and bringing basketball to the forefront of our local community.
“The sponsorship that Legis gives helps provide opportunities for people to play the sport and also provides valuable funding for the process of qualifying new coaches and officials,” he said.
The GBA will also be supporting the Future Stars programme this season. Developed by coaches Kerry Smyth and Jenny Rees and aided by The Guernsey Sports Commission, the scheme aims to support young people in both their sporting and social development by coaching them in basketball.
With sponsorship from the Legis Group amongst others, the 25 week initiative will give participants a solid understanding of the fundamentals of the sport, together with opportunities to compete in an age group league system.
Adrian Relph, director at the Legis Group said: “Investment in the local community is key to us. We’re really pleased to be supporting the basketball league for the second year running and also to be involved in the Future Stars programme.”
