Stuart steps down as senior men’s coach

The Guernsey Basketball Association will today start the search for a new Head honcho following Jeff Stuart’s decision to relinquish his role as Senior Men’s Basketball Coach.

Stuart has been in charge of the squad since 2006 and has lead Guernsey to 5 successive Inter Insular wins and has also been responsible for a considerate improvement at the 2007 and 2011 Island Games. He was also in charge of the Guernsey Men’s first taste of National League action giving players a chance to compete regularly at the highest level.

Stuart came to the Island in summer 2005 and began work at the Guernsey College of Further Education as the programme Manager for Sport and Tourism. He quickly established himself as one of the top players in the league and made his Island debut 9 months later in a tough loss to Jersey. Following that defeat Stuart replaced Simon Le Blancq as Head coach of the Men as well as taking over the reigns as Collins Stewart head coach and in his first domestic season he not only lead his club to the treble, (winning Upton MVP honours) but regained the Inter Insular trophy in a comfortable 13 point victory at Beau-Sejour. He currently represents Le Mont Saint 1 and averages 11 points per game in 63 matches since joining the League.

Guernsey President Pat Ogier – “Today is a sad day as Jeff has given so much since coming to the Island. His Inter Insular record is amongst the best in GBA history and the legacy he leaves behind will be remembered as one of the most prominent periods since the Association began in 1969. His coaching style bought about a new, team orientated way of playing and concentrated on the mental aspect of the game as well as the physical side. Jeff has decided to spend more time with his family and pursue other interests which we respect 100% but he still remains an integral member of the GBA and has offered his services to help with the appointment of a new coach. Jeff has also reiterated his desire to represent Guernsey on a playing level, which really is great news for the squad and his successor, whoever that may be. We thank him for all of his efforts and look forward to working with him in the future.
